About Rionowcast

The Rionowcast project is a consortium comprised of LNCC, CEFET-RJ, UFF, and the Centro de Operações Rio (COR), a crisis center devoted to monitor the Rio de Janeiro municipality. This collaborative initiative focuses on research, development, and student education in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Data Management, specifically applied to predicting extreme rainfall events in Rio de Janeiro.

As the number of occurrences of rainfall events with volume above 50mm per hour in the Rio de Janeiro city increases, it becomes paramount to develop technology capable of mitigating their impact. In a megacity such as Rio, extreme rainfall can cause a series of damages, involving urban floods, landslides, traffic congestion and even casualties.

To tackle these challenges, the Rionowcast consortium involves researchers, students and practitioners to develop AI-based models for predicting extreme rainfall.

Objectives

To collect and build datasets and AI models for short-term weather prediction.

To train undergraduate and graduate students as well as practitioners in applied AI research and technology.

To support COR with computational tools for weather forecast.
